- SHAPE : Large and treelike or tall clusters of stems.
- RIBS : Usually straight and pronounced even more so.
- AREOLE : Small to large and wooly.
- SPINES : Usually spiny, tree form usually strong and thick often falling off with age.
- FLOWERS : Late Spring/Summer, usually large, funnelform fragrant white and opening at night and finished by mid morning, towards the top of the plant.
