- SHAPE :Variable.
- RIBS : Starts with tubercles then curved ribs 4-26, usually well formed.
- AREOLE : Areoles borne at the tubercle tips.
- SPINES : Spines variable usually plentiful.
- FLOWERS : Spring and Summer developing from the upper edges of the areoles or bursting through the epidermis; open during the day, fairly large, funnelform, many coloured, floral tubes bearing spines, bristles and sometimes wool, stigmas always green.
