Reflections on the bus trip to Tarrington Exotics.  April 2nd 2006.

Tarrington Exotics

The first stop was Roraima Nursery Lara, approximately fifty minutes south west of Melbourne around 10.00am. At Lyle Filippe’s nursery members had a great time looking through all the landscaping range of succulents for sale. Lyle also took us for a personal guided tour through a major landscape garden that is still under construction. It is planned to open as a major public attraction with meandering paths and spectacular scenery.
Members felt very privileged.

Then on to Tarrington Exotics in Teesdale that is approximately two hours south west of Melbourne, for lunch and the rest of the afternoon. Rudolf provided refreshments and dessert – his famous homemade strawberry ice cream. Rudolf was planning his retirement and was scaling his nursery down and selling off his business so a lot of members were keen to follow up any chance of a bargain or the purchase of big garden specimens which of course you had to dig yourself.  In fact there were so many plant purchases made by all the members on the bus that the bus driver had problems fitting them all in.

The whole day was a great success. The bus was full with enthusiastic members to start off with and with members coming from far and wide to join us, even one from as far as Alice Springs, who flew down to join the bus. The driver also had to stop in Werribee to pick up extra members on the way. At each nursery we met carloads of other members from far and wide who came to join us. So besides the purchasing of plants there was an excellent opportunity for like minded people to get together and immerse themselves in their hobby with friends. One great photo scene was of some very prominent and long time members who rarely get together.

On the return of the bus to the hall, there were many car boots open with members trying to cram in plants that wouldn’t fit!!.
