The Cactus and Succulent Society of Australia Inc (CSSA) is the oldest Cactus and Succulent Society in Australia, established in Melbourne in 1927.

 The Society aims to advance and encourage the cultivation and maintenance of Cacti and Succulents, as well as to secure and circulate all reliable information pertaining the maintenance of such plants.

The Society holds monthly meetings and field trips, where members have the opportunity to view expert growers' collections and seek their professional advice.

The CSSA's Succulents & Cacti Show is an annual Spring event, consisting of a large display area with decorative and rare plants. This is complemented by unrivalled plant competitions as well as sales of specialized books and plants.

Australian company raises its glass to ethanol from agave

It helped put the smiles on Mexican faces as far back as the Aztec empire. Now the agave plant – the central ingredient of the potent drink Tequila – could be the source of wide grins in the biofuels industry as well.

South Australian company Ausagave has for the past four years been working towards growing the robust plant for ethanol production in this country.

Dangerous & Poisonous Cacti & Succulents

Don’t let the following put you off growing or appreciating these most fascinating plants. It can be far too easy for this to happen when you read articles like these.

For simplicity in dealing with such a complex and important subject, I’ve made two main obvious groups, one dealing with cacti and the other with succulents. Then in each case I deal with the dangerous ones first followed by the poisonous ones. (I distinguish a dangerous plant as one that is spiny, sharp with external features that can cause injury).
