(Bushfire Survivor’s Garden Assistance)
On Saturday 7th February 2009, horrific bushfires devastated areas of Victoria, destroying over 1800 homes, gardens, and many lives. (This was covered in an earlier article here)

The original idea was for my wife and myself to personally pot up 100 succulent cuttings for spring distribution.
Following discussions with a few Cactus and Succulent Society of Australia members, we decided that a Society project was appropriate instead. Within hours we had a wholesale succulent nursery offering a 20m polythene covered igloo with a watering system and other companies offering free potting mix (6 cubic metres), fertiliser and 2,000 plastic pots.

The Cactus and Succulent Society of Australia Inc (CSSA) is the oldest Cactus and Succulent Society in Australia, established in Melbourne in 1927. Similar societies are located Australia wide, in most capital cities and some country areas (see links page for more).

The Society aims to advance and encourage the cultivation and
maintenance of Cacti and Succulents, as well as to secure and circulate
all reliable information pertaining the maintenance of such plants.
The Society holds monthly meetings and field trips, where members have
the opportunity to view expert growers' collections and seek their
professional advice.
The CSSA's Succulents & Cacti Show is an annual Spring event,
consisting of a large display area with decorative and rare plants.
This is complemented by unrivalled plant competitions as well as sales
of specialized books and plants.
